I wrote an article for The Friend magazine a couple years ago. It's a monthly publication from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints geared for children ages 4-12. It was accepted for publication back in 2011, and after working on revisions, copy-edits, and even talking with the illustrator over the phone, it's finally out this month!
It's been fun to see my name in print, especially connected to a true story about my family. It's also super cool that it has been translated into several languages and has a worldwide (and very large) readership. Imagine my surprise when I found out the front cover of the magazine featured my story as well. So. Awesome. I may have bought 30 copies of this issue. That's not excessive, is it? ;)
Here's a link to the story online, and a neat feature there is you can listen to a recording...the reader makes the story sound much cooler than it is. :) If you have a copy of June 2013's The Friend magazine, open it up to "Stirling's Great Idea." You can see a picture of me and my family hiking...as caricatures of course. :)

Congrats Ilima, that is so awesome!
Ilima, that's awesome!! Wow, two years until it appeared. Worth the wait though. That's a major exposure.
And thirty copies isn't excessive. Go buy more.
How cool.
I think it'd be fun to get into magazine writing, but that's one more thing I probably won't do because I have no desire to put the time into figuring out how it all works. Novels are enough for me now. :)
You are awesome! And that's an amazing contribution to your religion. I think 30 is conservative, I would have bought more like 100, just to hand them out to everyone I meet! Ha.
SO AWESOME! I wouldn't be ashamed at all buying 30 copies. Or 100. :)
My kids and I really enjoyed it! Any story with a moose is fun. :) Great job!
Sheena-kay-Thank you!
Alex-I know, it feels like forever. I guess publishing just crawls no matter what the medium.
Suzi-I like writing short stories but feel the same way.
Jaybird-They're only like a buck each, so that was very tempting to do, lol.
Chantele-Haha. I'm thinking about buying it in different languages, lol.
Emily-Aw, thanks.
We loved your story. It was the first thing we read when the Friend arrived. A big congrats to seeing it in print (and being your first translated story:) )
Super fun! Congrats.
Loved it!!!!!!
Robin-I guess that makes me an international author now, right? ;)
Nicole-Thank you.
Tammy-Thanks, you are too sweet. :)
My kids also LOVED this story. They couldn't believe they were reading a story in print about kids they actually knew! And that's so awesome about the audio recording. I didn't know THE FRIEND did that!
How cool! Now I have to go sit down and read it with my kids.
Congrats Ilima! Can't wait to read your story when I find time to!
So proud of you for this!
Yay! Hooray for you! It looks lovely!

Congrats! I used to be an editor at the FRIEND and was required to write articles as part of my job . . . and I still bought extra copies whenever I had a byline. :) I'm excited to read your story and explore more of your blog.
