M is for Music

First of all, a big thank you to everyone who commented on my logline yesterday. I knew I could count on the writing community for help. You are THE BEST!

Now for the letter "M." Music is a HUGE part of my writing. I cannot outline, draft, revise, do anything without music. Yes, I have playlists for my books, but mostly it's the mood a song creates that seems to summon the writing muse. I'd go crazy without music. I have specific tastes, veering mostly toward alternative, though if it inspires, I don't care about genre. Much.

Do you listen to music when you write? Are you inspired by certain songs?

I've never heard of any of those.

When I play music it's usually someting instrumental as lyrics distract me.

My slow internet doesn't let me listen to songs real well :(

But I do know a lot of those songs. :) I listen to EVERYTHING! It's the lyrics that usually inspire me :)

My novel is set in China, so while wriitng it I was listening to hundreds of songs from China, to feel as if I am there. And then put the songs I liked the most in the storyline. Looking at you list, I know a few singers but none of the songs.
Allow me to suggest two songs. When you write about Nine flying in the shuttle losing contact with her planet and ready to crush ... put on YouTube "David Bowie - Space Oddity (with lyrics)". And when you get tired sitting and writing, put a song from the old state "Hawaiian Beauty by Emilia iAmhere" and dance, and then go back to writing.

I never listen to music when I'm writing. I find the tune distracting. One part of my brain follows along, and I need silence to concentrate. Strange how everyone is different. Blog on!

Hello! That's a terrific playlist. Sometimes I listen to music while I write, and sometimes I don't put on music. It's nice listening to the natural sounds of the day! What I listen to depends on my mood at the moment.

Hope you're having a lovely weekend and happy A to Z!!

When I write I must listen to music. Usually I just use Pandora and pick a band that plays the type of music I need for the MS I'm writing. (I'm not as organized as you are with your playlist which is AWESOME!)

When I edit, I can't have any words, so I listen to classical, jazz, etc.

Great post! I love music. However, the only type of music I can listen to and write is classical. It's just very soothing and not distracting.

Martin-haha. My kids do call it mom's weird music.

Cassie-I fall in love with lyrics too.

Giora-I've been listening to more dance/techno with this book based on certain scenes.

Francene-I used to go to the special room at the testing center in college that played music in the background to help me do better on tests. Go figure.

PV-Thanks for the suggestion.

Laura-Ha! My natural sounds of the day are screaming kids, usually. :)

Kelley-I edit with wordless music also.

Beth-For some reason, I can draft to music with words, but revising I need more classical music.

I love this post, Ilima. I also hugely depend on music for writing. But because I love to sing so much, I can't listen to music with words while I write, or all my brain wants to do is sing. So I listen to movie soundtracks. My favorites are those composed by Rachel Portman. But I do recognize and love a few artists from your list: Mumford & Sons, Death Cab for Cutie, Aqualung, The Killers, Frou Frou, Shiny Toy Guns, Snow Patrol and Fun. I bet I'd love even more if I heard them!

Katie-You've got me into Rachel Portman. :) If you like the Killers, you will be on my "favorite people" list forever. :)
