200 Followers/Anniversary Giveaway!

This month has been an epic one for me. I've reached 200 twitter followers, 200 blog followers, and it's been exactly one year since I started blogging. Add to that signing with an agent, and it is officially party time here in Ilima-land.

So to celebrate, I'm matching it with an epic giveaway with a few ways to win. All you have to do is answer one or more of the following questions in your comment. I will pick my favorite response to each question:

1-In exactly ten words, pitch me your book or another famous story. (Ex: Girl learns ill grandmother is wolf in disguise--shenanigans ensue.) Winner will receive a free query critique AND 10-page critique from the amazing Taryn Albright: writer, agent intern, Teen Eyes editor, and my CP. And if you haven't heard of Teen Eyes yet, go and check out all the amazing services they have to offer.

2-If you were stranded on an island and could only take one book with you, which would it be and WHY? Winner get's to choose a book from my top five fav's:

3-I love movies almost as much as I love books, so I want to know...what is your favorite book to movie adaptation and WHY? Winner gets a copy of Hunger Games the movie. May the odds be ever in your favor!

Here's a clip from one of my favorite adaptations, North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell, in all of its BBC glory. Can you say best on screen kiss EVER?

4-And finally, one winner will be chosen at random to receive a $20 Amazon gift card for a book or movie of your choosing. All you have to do is leave a comment, so even if your answers to the previous questions are somewhat lacking (as if!), you can still win. Score!

Answer one question, answer all, or just say "hi" in the comments. Either way, promise me you'll bust an '80's dance move in honor of the occasion. And what better way to dance than to the best fake '80's band of all time:

What a great giveaway! Off to think of something witty to say now!

Now THAT'S what you call a giveaway.

My favourite book adaptation is The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. An excellent book to read and very well made as a film. Sean Connery made an excellent monk and although I knew what was going to happen I was still nervously waiting at the end.

Ok here's my 10 word pitch of my WIP.

Angry girl meets dwarf, fights goblins, saves world, feels better.

Looking forward to reading some others.

First... LET'S DANCE!!!!

Okay, now that that is over with :)

I don't really have 'favorites' so I can't answer two or three... So here is my ten word pitch:

Machine converts stars into wishes - who decides wishes to grant?

Since I am the one who introduced you to North and South (right?), I believe I should win! I think that is one case where the movie was better than the book.

One book? - Lord of the Flies... maybe I can pick up some survival pointers.

Fav adaptation - I am Legend (you know I love the creepy stuff).

And now... totally busting the Kid N Play moves. *Kick out leg, *lock foot, *turn, *and repeat.

CONGRATS!

Here are my answers:
1. Sparkly vampire craves Jane Doe but knocks her up instead (10 words).

2. I would bring my own book, because I'd still be writing it! (That's a joke on me...four years and counting. Yeah, I really would have to bring it with me, or it'd never get done.)

3.This is the hardest yet. Hmmm...I'd have to say the latest Jane Eyre. The film was par with the book, which I can't say about most book-to-movie adaptions.

Again, congrats! :)

1. (I'll be honest, I got discouraged after seeing Emily's pitch. Brilliant.) My book: Werewolf wants to protect Pack, but must first protect herself.

2. Only one book? But I have a Nook! Ohh, ok. Then I pick... The Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs. I don't know why, but I occasionally wind up in a loop where I can't stop reading her Alpha & Omega series. I like all of them, but I think Hunting Ground may be my favorite.

3. Hm, Hunger Games was a pretty great movie adaptation in my opinion. But my favorite might be Bridge to Terabithia. I like that they went a different way than the book, that there's more about the fantastical world they created, while the book focused more on their reality.

4. Can I do the Hugh Grant bicycle handbars dance? I love that movie so much.

Congrats on the followers, and thanks for the giveaway!

Martin-Christian Slater is in that film! That deserves bonus points from me. :)

Suzanne-I love it! I'm glad she feels better after saving the world. Haha.

Kelley-Dancing right with ya. Your concise premise is just as cool as the full query. Also, BIG CONGRATS again on signing with an agent. SO THRILLED for you, my dear! It's been an awesome month for the both of us.

Lindsay-Yes, you are the one who introduced me to it, so bonus points for Lindsay! Thanks for commenting.

Danielle-I'd be scared to be stranded on that island with you if you were going to use that book as a reference guide. Ha. I lOVE 'I am Legend'! Nice choice. Thanks for dancing.

Emily-At first I was like, "Emily wrote a vampire book?" Haha. Nice pitch. I LOVE your answer to #2. You had me cracking up! And I really liked the latest Jane Eyre movie as well. I watched it right after reading the book for the first time and was very impressed.

Tobi-Girl werewolf with pack issues, I love it. And my top five books?--I keep coming back to them again and again and I don't know why, so I totally get that reasoning. LOVED Bridge to Terabithia the movie. And I was hoping someone would do the bike-revving move. Thank you!

Yay! I love excuses to dance!

1. Love literally stinks for Rae, until she smells something good.
(that 10 word pitch reeked;)

2. On an island, 1 book. this isn't easy Ilima! I think I'd have to sneak a few under my clothes. Okay, I'd take Robin McKinley's Blue Sword. (after my quad of course)

3. North and South is one of my fav.s too.
A Time to Kill b/c Matthew McConaughey has never looked hotter than in that southern humidity in those white dress shirts.

4. August is a great month. Just think what you'll be celebrating a year from now:)

ilima said...

Robin-I like the pitch! And re: #2, of course. :) Ah yes, A Time to Kill had a very yummy Matthew McConaughey. Speaking of John Grisham films, I remember being obsessed with The Pelican Brief when it came out because I loved that book so so much in high school.

Congrats on your followers! My favorite book-to-movie adaptation isn't necessarily an adaptation, but it is based loosely around Persuasion. It's Miss Austen Regrets with Olivia Williams. Really very brilliantly done, and I adore the music. :)

Carolee Beckham said...

so here's my pitch: (does it count if it's already a book that I created? i'd LOVE to turn it into something more moms can get.... especially since there's already interest in it :) you can see it here- http://blog.caroleebeckham.com/2012/05/sakura-bloom-sling-daries-explore_30.html

so here goes my ten-word summary:

mommy loves baby, promises to wear him to the moon

ilima said...

Michelle-I really like Olivia Williams. And Jane Austen, obviously. Nice.

Carolee-A picture book pitch! I love it. Thanks for commenting.

Congrats on all the successes! My brain isn't cooperating at this time of the morning, so... "hi". BTW, I received your book safe and sound! :)

Tess Julia said...

That was the best screen kiss ever! So romantic :) Congratulations on getting an agent and all your milestones. That's amazing!

ilima said...

Nick-Thanks for the "hi". And glad the book made it across the seas in safety. :)

Rose-I know, right? I've watched that scene an embarrassing number of times. And thanks for the congrats!

Oh my gosh, this is so cool. But I might need some time to really think about my answers. I'll be back when I pull it together. LOL

Congrats on 200 followers Ilima!

1. Can I pitch a famous play?
Here goes: Boy likes girl who likes cross-dressing girl who likes boy.

2. Danny the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl Why? Because only Dahl could make poaching pheasants so endearing.

3. The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Now, usually I feel like stories lose something when they are adapted to movies, but Tolkien, brilliant as he was, had a real weakness for wandering from the plot, something you really can't do in a movie.

Congrats on the 200 followers. I'm a new one, thanks to the Fairy Tale Blogfest!

Whew-hew, party time! And what an epic way to celebrate!

Book on a desert island: Shadow & Bone. You know how much I love this book! Why? Super epic, fantastic, romantic (all my favorite things).

Book-to-movie adaptation: Emma (the newer, four-hour Masterpiece Classic version). I love what they added: how Jane, Emma and Frank all lost their mothers and how that strangely bound them together; how Emma longed to travel, but couldn't. And Jonny Lee Miller is the best Knightley ever!

jaybird said...

I'm Baaaack.

1) Man reads from notebook and woman remembers she loves him.

2) The Bible- because I can read this book every day and never get bored of it.

3) The Painted Veil. Why? Two words. Edward Norton. Duh.

4) I am the Queen of 80's dance moves and big hair. I'm particularly awesome at The Cabbage Patch and no one rocked a banana clip better than yours truly.

Congrats again on reaching 200.

ilima said...

Connie-Shakespeare...good one! I love Roald Dahl and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Ooh, this is getting tough. Thanks for the follow.

Katie-Yes, S&B is becoming a household name in our circle. And I haven't seen this Emma, added to my TBW pile. Your movie rec's are the best. (Just not for you know who) :)

Jaybird-I probably should have said: besides scriptures...what book would you take? Ha. My sis-in-law told me my hubs (her brother) reminds her of Edward Norton and I was like omigosh yes. I love him. Cabbage Patch moves and the banana clip..my life exactly.

jaybird said...

Hmm- if I couldn't take the Bible, then I would probably pick The Island of the Blue Dolphins, by Scott O'Dell.

It was one of my favorite books when I was a little girl, and I would be comforted by the fact that another girl survived living on an island, all by herself :)

Gwen Gardner said...

Only choose one book? Oh I might just hyperventilate. Okay, as of right now it'd have to be Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - yeah, I'm pretty sure I can read that one over and over and over again:) Congrats on your 200 Followers and getting an agent!
